Vaginal Prolapse Repair
When the upper part of the vagina (apex) is pushed down into the lower part of the vagina or even outside the opening by the intestine (enterocele) or the rectum (rectocele), it can give the sensation of something stuck or falling out of the vagina. This is called vaginal vault prolapsed or if it also involves a portion of intestine it may be refered to as an enterocele.
This uncomfortable condition can be corrected surgically through the vagina, or with robotic or laparoscopic assistance through the abdomen. Although the approach of each of these procedures are completely different ,in either case the surgeon will introduce a synthetic or biologic mesh which is attached from the proslapsed vagina to ligaments deep in the pelvis.
In time, normal tissue grows into the mesh to hold it in place. Whether performed through the vagina or the abdomen with robotic assistance, each of these procedures carries a high success rate and both are minimally invasive.
