Cytoscopy is a diagnostic procedure where a scope it passed through the urethra into the bladder. A lens at the end of the scope magnifies the structures so that the doctor can treat, monitor, or diagnose bladder conditions.
Cytoscopy can be used to investigate symptoms such as recurrent bladder infections, blood in the urine, overactive bladder, incontinence, or painful urination. It can also be useful in diagnosing bladder stones, enlarged prostate or bladder cancer. Sometimes small tumors of the bladder can be removed during cytoscopy.
